The Basics of Compression Pump Packing

What is Pump Packing?

Pump packing is one of the earliest forms of sealing pumps and is widely used over the mechanical sealing option. These packings are often braided, fibrous material, such as graphite or non-graphite acrylic, PTFE, or other such materials. The packing material is stuffed into the pump’s seal chamber, between the rotating member and the body of the pump or valve. As the packing is tightened, it squeezes up the shaft and the stuffing box wall to create a seal.

Advantages & Disadvantages

There are many advantages in using pump packing such as the upfront cost, wide availability, simplicity to install, and most importantly, it’s easily replaceable with a minimal amount of downtime. This means you can easily replace any worn-out packing quickly to keep the pump running.

Packing does have some drawbacks, but the biggest is that it must be lubricated – either externally or by the pumped liquid. This means that packing must leak slightly which could cause a bit of a mess.

Proper Selection of Pump Packing Materials

APG offers several braid configurations, packing fibers, and materials readily available to be shipped to you. Choosing the correct one can be intimidating and confusing. If an equipment manufacturer has not provided guidance or specifications, how can you choose the correct materials? APG has made it easy to learn about all of our materials in an easy to read guide.

The FSA (Fluid Sealing Association) recommends using the acronym STAMPS as the key to choose the right material.

  • Size: What is the stuffing box dimensions?
  • Temperature: What is the max operating temperature of the medium?
  • Application: What type of equipment is it?
  • Media: What is the internal pressure being sealed?
  • Pressure: What is the internal pressure being sealed?
  • Shaft Speeds: What is the surface speed of the shaft?

In using STAMPS, you go over all the possible functions of the equipment such as media, temperatures, pressures, and shaft speeds.
